Learn The Bass! Cincinnati Bass Lessons With John C. Toedtman

The study of bass in Cincinnati is a pursuit that is time-honored. Many great bassists have come from Hamilton County and the greater Tri-State area, including one of the most famous bass players to have ever played R&B, soul and funk: Cincinnati’s own Bootsy Collins, aka Bootzilla.

Double Bass Lessons

Many students begin their bass studies learning classical double bass. In learning bowed and plucked double bass, students not only develop a broad understanding of music, but they learn to read and write musical notation. Acquisition of this language – the language of bass clef and music notation – is also the cornerstone of learning harmony and music theory.

Electric Bass Lessons

However, you don’t have to start off on the stand up bass! Many students want to begin playing rock music as soon as possible, and that’s why electric bass lessons are available as well! About half of the bass students at Toedtman School of Music take electric bass lessons.

And on that note, great bass teachers are not easy to find, but here at Toedtman School of Music we are fortunate to have one helping run the family business: our very own John C. Toedtman.

John C. Toedtman

John is not only a gifted teacher, but as a double bassist he has performed with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, the Dayton Philharmonic, the West Virginia Symphony, and the Kentucky Symphony. He is a graduate of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a Bachelor degree in Double Bass performance.

We are particularly proud of John’s former students. Many of his former pupils have won scholarships to music schools. His bass students have gone on to great things at institutions ranging from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, the Berklee College of Music, the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, and Michigan State University, to closer campuses such as Northern Kentucky University, University of Louisville, and CCM (the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music).
