The Oldest Private Music School in Cincinnati

1974 was a much different time. Star Wars was still just a twinkle in John Williams’ ear. Queen wouldn’t put out “Bohemian Rhapsody” until the following summer. Herbie Hancock had just released his Head Hunters album, featuring “Chameleon.” Dmitri Shostakovich and Benjamin Britten were still alive. The movie musicals of Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, and Mame had just had their theatrical runs. The Big Red Machine of Pete Rose and Johnny Bench would arrive in Cincinnati the following April.

It was in that setting that a young married couple, John and Melissa Toedtman, began teaching music lessons in their home in Madeira, on Laurel Avenue.

The Growth of a Cincinnati Music School

Over the years, Mr. and Mrs. Toedtman grew their family business. They upgraded their location to larger studios – to Remington Road in Montgomery, then to Mosteller Road, and finally to its current home at 9678 Cincinnati Columbus Rd West Chester OH 45241. Cincinnati has been very kind to the Toedtmans and their children, and the Toedtman School of Music has flourished. The Toedtmans have hired teachers on a wide range of instruments, and have expanded their offerings to include voice lessons, art lessons, early music classes for toddlers, and more.

Toedtman School of Music Students Today!

More than 40 years later, the Toedtman School of Music has matured into Cincinnati’s oldest private music school. Our students have gone on to great things – not only in the field of professional music, though some have found remarkable success as performers and composers – in medicine, science, academia, public service, and more. We could not be more proud of our Toedtman alumni, and the wonderful gifts they bring to their communities, in Cincinnati and elsewhere.
